10 games that should be inducted into the Global Video Game Hall of Fame

The World Video Game Hall of Fame has inducted some of the most influential video games every year since its inception in 2015. Located at the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, which is also home to the National Toy Hall of Fame, the World Video Game Hall of Fame has already inducted heavyweights such as Tetris, Super Mario Bros.and Street Fighter II.

The four 2022 inductees, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and dance dance revolution, bring the total number of dedicated games to 36. With only 36 games so far inducted into the Global Video Game Hall of Fame, there are plenty of games yet to get the call. Games that have left a lasting impression on both gamers and the industry as a whole fully deserve to be inscribed in the Global Video Game Hall of Fame.

With how prominent first-person shooters and multiplayer have become in the decades since, Tourniquet 007 definitely deserves its place in the World Video Game Hall of Fame.

Super Smash Bros. would later become a mega-franchise with developers both inside and outside of Nintendo clamoring to include their classic characters. Super Smash Bros. would go on to inspire other brands such as PlayStation and Nickelodeon to create their own platform fighters.

And if the World Video Game Hall of Fame ever starts inducting video game commercials, Super Smash Bros. The “Happy Together” ad should be a first-round induction.

4 Halo 2 was one of the greatest video game releases of all time

Few game releases have managed to get mainstream media coverage, both local and national, like Halo 2 Release. That’s how much anticipation there was for Halo 2the monumental suite of the inductee in 2017 Halo: Advanced Combat. Gamers lined up at retailers everywhere to be among the first to get their hands on Halo 2.

Halo 2, coupled with the release of Xbox Live, moved the multiplayer culture outright from the couch to online. What Halo 2 brought to online multiplayer alone is worthy of induction. Halo 2 also sports an excellent story campaign, one that has always hooked players with the lore of Master Chief and the universe around him.

3 Virtua Fighter deserves to see an induction before Tekken

Just because a game is influential doesn’t mean it can’t be eclipsed. virtual fighter introduced 3D combat to the previously 2D combat genre. Players could move forward, backward, and switch from side to side.

While virtual fighter saw many successful releases, it was eventually overshadowed by the tekken series. the tekken the series itself deserves several inductions, but these should come after virtual fighter sees an induction for virtual fighter or even Virtual Fighter 2. It would be a fitting way to honor Virtua Fighter’s impact on the fighting genre and give it a much-deserved moment in the spotlight.

2 Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night are in the same class

Sometimes defining a genre is a team effort, which is evident in the Metroidvania genre. Metroidvania takes its name from two series: metroid and Castlevania. Both metroid and Castlevania would inspire many Metroidvania games that would forever be tied to these two franchises. What better way to induct early Metroidvania games than by inducting both a metroid and one Castlevania game in the same class?

The choices for which metroid and Castlevania the games are simple. Both Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night were each monumental in establishing the Metroidvania genre by refining early concepts such as combat and non-linear exploration.

The World Video Game Hall of Fame barely scratches the surface of worthy inductees, especially in the RPG genre. The iconic Final Fantasy VII saw his own induction in 2018. While Final Fantasy VII was an important game for the RPG genre, it wasn’t the first major RPG title.

With Ocarina of time I just saw an induction, I feel like it’s only a matter of time before the trigger of a stopwatch will headline its own class.
