Some fan-favorite GTA games have been idolized by some fans as the greatest games in the series.
While the basic concept of these games has been largely the same since GTA 3, there are notable differences in many games in the series that set them apart from each other.
It could be something as simple as better graphics, or it could be unique gameplay features not found in other games in the series.
It should be noted that these games are not listed in any particular order. They are simply listed as the top five fan favorite GTA games for the sake of this article.
The main purpose of this article is to show why these games are popular rather than any comparison between said titles.
Five beloved GTA games and why fans love them
# 5 – GTA Online
Online multiplayer games are quite rare in the GTA series, but GTA Online is by far the most successful iteration of this formula. Despite being technically part of GTA 5, Online manages to stand out with its major updates over the years.
It is the most relevant game in the series as it receives the most updates, with a game like GTA 5 receiving updates in the form of new editions.
# 4 – GTA 4
Some players prefer realism and stories rooted in reality. No game in the series does it quite as well as GTA 4, although that aspect alienates some fans as well. That said, the story of this game is the most vivid and real in the series, and this game introduced the HD universe to the franchise.
Expansion packs, The Ballad of Gay Tony, and The Lost and Damned are also great games in their own right.
# 3 – GTA Vice City
Classic ’80s nostalgia and minor upgrades make fans prefer GTA Vice City over its predecessor. The music is great, the city is vibrant in its colors, and the storyline is simple, but it unfolds wonderfully from start to finish.
It’s also worth noting that GTA Vice City is one of the games in the series to feature Vice City as a visitable location, especially since it’s not yet available in the HD universe.
# 2 – GTA San Andreas
For most GTA fans, GTA San Andreas is the greatest GTA game of the 3D era. It introduced a massive amount of customization options, ranging from hairstyles and combat styles to vehicle customization.
The storyline was memorable, and unlike other older GTA titles, GTA San Andreas has aged wonderfully well (except in the graphics, which are easily corrected with mods).
# 1 – GTA 5
GTA 5 is the best-selling GTA game of all time and the competition isn’t even tight. It is the most recent main game in the series and comes free with GTA Online. It’s ultimately the de facto GTA game in the eyes of most casual gamers, and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
There are so many examples of pristine attention to detail in this game, and the amount of content in it is sublime.
