In June, a report said that Everwild, Rare’s latest gaming IP, was be completely restarted. In a recent interview with Kinda funny, Matt Booty, director of Xbox Game Studios, said this report was “more specific and a little more extreme” than the truth.
In her Kinda Funny interview (via GamesRadar), Booty discussed how game development, especially the rich and distinct narrative flavor that Rare created, is a difficult process made up of thousands of small decisions.
“Why is Rare famous?” Booty said. “They are known to create new IPs and create worlds. I will say that when you look at it from the outside, when you hear words like ‘reset’ and maybe ‘restructure’ these are probably a bit more precise and a little more extreme than what actually happens when a game comes to life. “
Booty also referred to his work alongside NBA Jam developer Mark Trammell.
“He used to say that a game is made a thousand little decisions at once,” Booty said. “Every day you make hundreds of little decisions and at the end of your time working on the game they all add up. I think that’s where Team Everwild is right now. They’re trying. just make sure they got something special. “
Booty also explained how, even with the time it takes to create and release a game, a game’s state can change (or improve) dramatically with each new release.
“There are days when you’re just terrified,” Booty said. “What are they up to? How is this going to come about? Then you balance that out with a day later that build falls into place and you say to yourself “it’s magic.”
Concerns about a restart of Everwild development started when the game was absent from Microsoft’s game showcase events in 2019. Everwild Creative Director Simon Woodroffe also left Rare in 2020. Rare filled the director’s chair with veteran designer Gregg Mayles, who previously worked on Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Pinata, and Sea of Thieves.
The initial report of the supposed reboot also stated that Everwild may have changed the original concept of the third-person adventure game with “god game elements”, but did not confirm if any changes actually occurred. .

Booty said Xbox will have more to share on Everwild when Rare has more to show and they “don’t want to keep things under wraps for too long.”
