Futurama video game suites could play with Ratchet & Clank

Futurama has dabbled in video games in the past, but a new game could be the franchise revival fans have been craving since the series had its finale.

Although Futurama may have seen a definitive end on television, the series could easily have a bright future if it made the leap into video games. Matt Groening’s sci-fi show is filled with the same themes that video games are popular with every year. With titles like Ratchet & Clank systematically combining humor and sci-fi adventures to good effect, why not Futurama do what he’s always done best in a different way?

Futurama is an animated sci-fi television series from the creator of The simpsons. The show centers on Fry, a frozen pizza delivery boy in 1999 and his colleagues employed at a delivery company in the year 3000. Futurama has dabbled in gaming before, with both PlayStation 2 and Xbox receiving a Futurama game in 2003 and mobile title Futurama: the worlds of tomorrow released in 2017.

Although the series has experimented with video games before, it has never achieved definitive success. One of the attempts was a third-person action-adventure title marred by clunky controls and an unpolished overall presentation. The only other one was a newer gacha city building game. Sadly, neither attempt gave the thrilling setting and colorful characters the legs they needed to run. Nonetheless, the right team could manage, with love and respect, until the last bit of Futurama‘s potential.

From the metropolitan sprawl of New York City and its mutant-filled underground caverns of Old New York to Santa’s Fortress of Death on Pluto to Robot Hell, Futurama is absolutely rife with places that would thrive as a modern gaming setting. In reality, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart recently used similarly crafted backgrounds to great effect, providing players with huge and detailed environments to explore. Of course, an interesting setting alone is not enough to captivate most players for the duration of a title. Ratchet & Clank was backed by characteristic explosive combat, memorable characters and polished gadgets like Hover Boots – Futurama can do even better.

FuturamaThe characters already have years of history and development behind them, providing plenty of references for longtime fans and an abundance of jokes for newcomers to the series to understand. With luck, all of the voice cast would get involved and, having been used to playing the voice in the animated show before, would deliver their usual award-winning performances. Interesting and fun gadgets shouldn’t be a hindrance for Futurama That is. Set a thousand years into the future, the show already had its fair share of wacky inventions from Planet Express Delivery Co. owner Professor Farnsworth. The Good Professor is responsible for iconic innovations like Smell-O-Scope, Fing-Longer, and What-if Machine, but he’s also just as likely to create mutant spider basketball players or an apocalyptic device.

Assuming a new Futurama game tracking Ratchet & ClankAs an action-adventure title, it may seem like the action isn’t a strong point for animated comedy. On the contrary, Futurama made some exciting encounters that could reappear or inspire new ones. Fighting parasitic worms inside someone’s body, harvesting space honey from giant space bees, taking on the Robot Mob, these are just a few of the action possibilities that we could lean on. Plus, there’s always flexibility within the series for events like alien invasions or oppression by the insidious MomCorp as encounters and storytelling building blocks.

With 128 episodes, four films and a passionate fan base behind, Futurama has a deep universe that demands a new adaptation of the game. Even after the end in 2013, viewers are still drawn to the series for its timeless characters and enchanting setting. There is no doubt that if the right team got down to work on a new Futurama video game, this could be the revival of the series that fans have been clamoring for.
