Details are emerging regarding a Killzone VR game originally planned for the first PSVR that may now be in development for PSVR 2.
The PlayStation VR headset opened up new possibilities on PlayStation consoles, but few would argue that the first PSVR headset truly lived up to its potential. The limitations of PS4 hardware and still few VR game developers held back on PSVR. Sony is now hoping the PSVR 2 headset will build on what the original started, meaning bigger franchises will come to VR. One of these games could be a virtual reality adaptation of Killzoneif rumors are to be believed.
The Killzone VR the rumor comes from Bryan Paul in the latest PSVR Without Word video. Paul has already shared some preliminary PSVR news and is back with details on the development of a Killzone VR Game. Although Paul is not sure if a Killzone VR game is currently in development, it has details of a former Killzone project that he says could have become a PSVR 2 game release.
Killzone VR is described as having started out as a game for the original PSVR made by Supermassive Games. Supermassive had just completed a series of PSVR games, including Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, The hospitalizedand Well done team between 2016 and 2018. Sony also apparently contracted Supermassive to manufacture Killzone VR over those years, drawing on his experience with both the PSVR headset and remastering Killzone for PS3. Unfortunately, in 2019, Sony was unhappy with the project and canceled it.
Paul says that while the development of Supermassive Killzone VR ended, Sony did not abandon the project. Instead, he shifted the development of Killzone VR internally. This is where Paul’s faith in what happened ends and where he begins to speculate. He goes on to say that if the internal development of Killzone VR started in 2019, it is possible that the project is planned as a launch game for the PSVR 2.
PSVR 2 does not currently have a launch date, nor any confirmed launch games. It has games slated for the platform, however, like Horizon Call of the Mountain and Among us VR. Killzone VRif it exists, would no doubt prove to be a strong seller and showcase for the capabilities of PSVR 2. It makes a lot of sense, in that regard.
VR enthusiasts may not have to wait long for confirmation of the rumor either. Sony announced last week that it plans to talk about PSVR 2 games at its upcoming State of Play event on June 2. Whether Killzone VR is not at the event, the reliability of the rumor is questioned. Always a Killzone VR project is an exciting idea that Sony will hopefully follow eventually.
Killzone VR is rumored for the PSVR 2.
