A Marvel MMO led by genre veterans has been cancelled.
Earlier today, EG7 announced (opens in a new tab) it would be interrupting the development of a Marvel MMO that Daybreak Games is working on. The announcement lists “the development risk profile, size of investment and long-term product portfolio strategy for the group” as the primary reasons for the MMO’s cancellation.
The company revealed during the announcement that it initially plans to invest more than 500 million Swedish kronor (about $50 million) in the Marvel project over the next three years.
Instead of working on the bigger Marvel MMO, EG7 has announced that it will focus on smaller projects instead, continuing to work on projects like The Lord of the Rings Online and DC Universe Online instead. This is in addition to the original IPs in progress at E7-owned development studios.
Unfortunately, Daybreak Games‘ Marvel MMO will never see the light of day. If you’re unfamiliar with the project, it was only relatively recently announced in November 2021, with genre veteran Jack Emmert heading up development, having previously tackled games like Star Trek Online and DC Universe Online. .
In fact, Emmert was revealed to be running NetEase’s new US studio earlier this month. The Chinese company announced that it would be opening its first US-based studio with Emmert in charge to develop PC and console games, which perhaps should have been an indicator that work on the Marvel MMO at Daybreak Games was not doing so well. Good.
