Amazon Game Studios could have success with New World, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game where players can work together in factions to conquer a fantasy continent known as Aeternum. As the game updates and develops, the battles between player-led communities could become more and more epic over time.
New World hit some impressive numbers with its launch this week (it peaked at over 700,000 concurrent players), but the success isn’t just about the numbers for developers. Before launch, RadioTimes.com spoke to Global Gaming Experience Manager Mike Willette and he had a different definition of success.
Willette explained, “For me, success is like the players are deeply invested in what the game has to offer and then become part of the conversation with us.” He added: “The success for me would be to work and play on this game for years to come.”
If the game’s launch day players stick around and attract their friends, word of mouth is already spreading, Willette may well achieve her definition of success. In theory, New World could be updated for years to come. Are Willette and her colleagues already planning their future projects on a large whiteboard of ideas?
Willette teased, âOh, we’ve got tons of ideas to brainstorm on, what would be a fun adventure to have, or places to see, topics we haven’t covered yet. And it is felt like in all our different teams. Inspiration comes from all kinds of places. So yeah, we have tons of drafts, some on post-its, some on whiteboards. It’s a very exciting thing.
We wondered if the New World itself, the island that gives the game its title, might expand after launch, and so we asked Willette how big the world is now and how much bigger it could become. big.
âThe game world is currently made up of 14 areas,â Willette told us, âand each area measures approximately four kilometers by four kilometers, just to give you a rough picture of the size of the current view of the east island. But launch is only day one for us – we’ll be creating a lot more content, but we can’t reveal anything today. But we’re still creating content for the game. So there will be new themes to explore. . This is a very exciting thing. But again, I have to bite my tongue.
It looks like Willette and his team are keen to build New World’s future around fan feedback as well. He says, âWe want to hear people on forums and our social networks tell us what they like and what they don’t like. This kind of back and forth between fans and developers is often important for live online games like this, where ideally there should always be a large number of players in your game at some point.
As Willette puts it, âI’ve been in games since 2001 I think, and I can tell you, making games is difficult. And developing and launching live games is always a challenge. We’ve spent a lot of time on New World with our Alpha testing to provide customer feedback and ideas to continue to evolve the game. The biggest inspiration I get comes from our players, who give us unique perspectives on what we are building. I think that’s the one constant truth, when it comes to making games, is the insight of the players.
As more players get their hands on the game, is Willette excited to get even more of this information? Is he hoping to see players try things out and come up with ideas the developers may not have anticipated on their own?
Willette said, “Yeah, that’s absolutely the magic of games – you might think you’ve got one thing and you’ve tested it and you’ve played it, and then it comes out on this big scale, and someone finds out that. thing that just becomes like a lightning rod.
“And you’re like, ‘Oh wow, this is really great. Oh, we’ve got to double or triple that. It was something we might not have thought of, or we did, but we had no idea how popular it would be. And you say to yourself, you know what, there is something there. Let’s continue after that. We think the players really like it and we think it’s fantastic.
âSo I’ve worked on a lot of projects, and part of the fun is that kind of discovery where things come to the surface organically and become something really great to pursue. One thing’s for sure, this is just the start for the New World’s Aeternum Island.
