Horror games are fantastic, aren’t they? They let us escape one dark reality into another, albeit this time usually with terrifying supernatural creatures. Being scared while watching a movie is a fun time. Yet it will never be the same as entering a game where you have to make choices, and you have to control the stupid protagonist who decides to enter the scary building, or the city, or the carnival, or any something else that has a whiff of weirdness about it.
However, what might not be so fun is when the horror trickles down to the achievements, making them much more complex than necessary. Sure, everyone enjoys a challenge once in a while, but these games have gone too far.
13 FEAR – Multiplayer Achievements and Difficulty
Complete the campaign and multiplayer maps on Extreme difficulty. Weapon destruction achievements in multiplayer. Kill all enemies in the story.
To complete all difficulty-based and multiplayer achievements, you’ll need to first test the waters with a run through normal mode, then complete stages in extreme mode. While playing the campaign to the extreme, you will have to kill all the enemies, without letting a single one slip through the cracks. Finally, earn weapon destruction achievements in multiplayer by killing 50 enemies with each weapon. Who has time for all that?
12 BioShock 2 – Reincarnation
Reach rank 50.
The BioShock Remastered Collection lacks the multiplayer seen in the original. Given that the original multiplayer is pretty much dead in the water, getting this achievement will be an incredibly difficult feat, more so than it was originally. For “Reincarnation” you need to reach online rank 50, which means a lot of grinding.
You spend hours and hours repeating the same mode until you reach rank 50. After that, all you have to do is use the rebirth action to bring your score back to rank one.
11 Dead By Daylight – Unlock every achievement
Unlock all achievements in Dead By Daylight.
Dead by Daylight is a game with new achievements added every two months – with each new DLC pack, these tend to add about five more. Those related to standard characters are easy to work with, but the various ones like Legendary Survivor/Legendary Killer will be hard to get.
Legendary achievements require you to spend nearly enough of all your free time playing if you want to reach and maintain the highest rank. Be prepared to sink a little more time into this one.
ten Bloodborne – Hunter’s Essence
Acquire all common weapons and firearms.
Hunter’s Essence is completely missable because there’s no guarantee you’ll get your hands on every weapon, at least not without a guide. There are plenty online with step-by-step instructions on locations and the best routes to these guns.
You’ll find some just by playing the game, but for others, you’ll need to earn a specific badge, then go to a merchant and purchase the selected weapon with your Blood Echoes. Unfortunately, this is one of those tasks that you probably won’t be able to complete on your own.
9 Silent Hill 2 HD – She would be proud
Unlock all other achievements for the platinum trophy.
She would be proud is another case of hustle to get all the achievements of certain games. For Silent Hill 2 (from the HD collection), most achievements will still be locked at the end of the story.
There are seven trophy-related endings, with a speed trophy requiring you to complete in less than three hours and complete with less than two saves. This means that you will have to play the game at least six or seven times; on average, the game takes about eight hours.
8 The Last Of Us 2 – Dig two graves
Complete the story in Grounded mode.
Like the original game, The Last of Us Part 2 introduced its hardest difficulty, Grounded mode, as well as its new game and update. Some things that come with the earth are less resources and ammo in the world, enemies deal more damage and are accurate with their headshots, no health indicators and no ammo count, which means you’ll have to remember or guess how many are left. Accessibility options can make this easier, but you’ll still have to deal with the stupidly accurate gunplay of enemies.
seven Darkest Dungeon – End of the World / In such a hurry
Complete the game on Stygian difficulty. Complete the game in 99 weeks of play.
Players recommend that it’s best to work towards both of these achievements simultaneously, as Stygian has a 100 week time limit, so you’ll be good to go (as long as you don’t exceed the 99 week limit for World End.)
In Stygian, if 12 or more of your heroes are killed, your save file will be deleted, and you will have to start over. Likewise, if you go over the 99-week limit, you will also have to start over. Darkest Dungeon is relentless, though some achievements are just too hard to unlock.
6 Catherine – A God is born!
Complete the fourth stage of Babel mode.
Babel is a four-stage challenge mode that has no continuity due to the randomness of block placements, which are different with each attempt. Working much like a hard difficulty, you can’t undo your moves and must plan accordingly. You also have one life for the whole stage, so if you die, go back to the start.
If that doesn’t sound bad enough, the Axis Mundi final stage has ten stages that, on average, will take players 15-20 minutes.
5 Limbo – No need to die
– Complete the game in a single session with five kills or less.
Reading the requirements of this Limbo achievement, it doesn’t seem too difficult to achieve. Don’t die in a short game? Sounds easy enough; all you need is to prepare… right? Well, that would probably be true for any other title, but a lot of Limbo is all about getting killed in various ways.
The story can be completed in around an hour once you know a direct route to the final chapter, but due to the many hazards on the map, it will ruin your entire run if you hit the six kill mark.
4 Outlast 2 – Messiah
Complete the game on Insane difficulty without recharging the camera battery.
Everyone’s heard of the infamous Insane difficulty in the original Outlast, where you can’t save, there are no checkpoints, and if you die, it’s game over. Outlast 2 has a similar mode tied to an achievement called Messiah. Aptly named, this mode works the same on both titles, except this time you can’t charge your camera battery.
Outlast 2 is a dark game, most of it takes place outdoors, and there are very few places with decent enough lighting that won’t require you to pull out a new battery. To unlock Messiah, you’ll need to know the map layout inside out.
3 Dead Space 2 – Hard to the Core
Complete the story in Hardcore mode.
Hardcore is nothing but a bunch of painful segments that you have to replay over and over again until finally all you wanted to do is crawl into a ball and never touch again Dead Space 2. You get three saves, so you’ll need to plan ahead as those are the only saves available in the entire game.
Ammo drops are limited, enemies are powerful, and if you die you’ll have to replay for hours before returning to this location. If that description doesn’t give enough credit, there’s a lengthy guide to the Dead Space Wiki dedicated to this mode.
2 The Evil Within – You Asked For It
Complete the game on Akumu mode.
Akumu is a one-hit kill mode where 99% of enemies can and will ruin your life. They will sense you close to them even when sneaking around and react to every slight sound. Enemies sometimes spawn much earlier than they do on normal difficulty, so you’ll need to prepare for late game enemies before they’re usually set to spawn.
Syringes are banned as they are no longer useful as anyone can take you down with one shot. You’re also very likely to get a significant jump scare boost from any excess enemies hanging around the location.
1 Dead Rising – 7 Day Survivor
Survive for at least seven days in Infinity Mode.
7-Day Survivor is the ultimate example of an achievement unattainable for most. At first, it feels like nothing more than beating zombies until you hit the seven-day mark, but sadly, it’s a whole lot worse. You’ll have to do this in Infinity Mode, which means there’s no saving and playing in one sitting. It also means that you are constantly losing health and eating is the only way to regain health.
Food can be found around the map or looted from any psychopaths you kill. Stocking up on food is the basic guideline when going for 7-Day Survivor. Now all that’s left to do is allocate 16 hours of free time to work on it.
