Madurai: A 22-year-old residing in Maharashtra was arrested by city police months after he ran away and raped a 16-year-old girl from Madurai with whom he had befriended through an online gambling application. The girl’s parents had filed a missing person complaint at Thiruparankundram Police Station after she was found missing from her home on December 20, 2021.
According to the police, the victim, a class XI pupil, studying at a public school in Madurai, regularly played a popular online multiplayer shooting game, Free fire. She befriended K. Selvam, 22, who resided in Raigad district of Maharashtra while playing the game and developed a relationship within a year. He convinced her to flee to Maharashtra in December 2021 by promising to marry him.
A police team was formed to investigate and subsequently the girl was located and rescued on April 4 this year in Maharashtra and brought home. On July 7, the police team managed to track down and secure Selvam in Uran, Raigad district in Maharashtra. The police further stated that the youth married the girl illegally in a child marriage and also raped her. Therefore, a case was registered under various sections of the Pocso Act and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. Selvam was arrested and taken to Madurai where he was taken into custody on Monday.
